PUBLIC PROFILE

Arthur Boucaut Jones

Local Resident

Murraylands · SA

Capt. Bouc, teacher, River Master

I am a retired school principal and teacher/trainer/consultant on school camping and youth adventure education. I am very concerned about the current dropout rate of high school students, currently 24%.
As a contribution to helping dropout teens to stay in education during their transition years 15-18, I am working on creating a fleet of Houseboat style School ships working as "Cocoons' to reset the thinking of these dropout teens at risk.

Avoca trust

Aerie College and the associated DGR Trust Avoca trust plans to establish a fleet of school ships working the Murray to hold Teens aged 15-18 at risk of education dropout. The SA Law dictates that these young people are required to continue their education. Parents are at risk of a fine if their children drop out of school.

Distinguished and Famous people from East Gippsland

🎨 Percy Leason

Artist and cartoonist Percy Leason visited Lake Tyers in 1934 with anthropologist Donald Thomson and colleagues, completing twenty-eight portraits of Aboriginal people. The paintings form a significant East Gippsland chapter in a career that also included magazine illustration, cartoons and later teaching in the United States. Born and raised in the Wimmera, Leason’s local association here is the portrait project. The portraits preserve individual likenesses from the Lake Tyers community during that visit.

🎭 David Williamson

David Williamson grew up in Bairnsdale before university and an early career in engineering. Playwriting proved more satisfying, and his work became central to the growth of Australian theatre in the 1970s. The Club brought the rivalries of a football club onto the stage; film writing included Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously. His plays often let audiences laugh at familiar ambitions, arguments and social habits. East Gippsland’s connection is the Bairnsdale childhood before the professional career, rather than a claim that his best-known productions were created or first performed there.

📚 Nina Carr

Nina Carr taught at Bairnsdale during a career that took her through country and city schools before major appointments in girls’ education. She later became foundation principal of Mentone Girls’ School and led Mac.Robertson Girls’ High through years of social change. Her approach took students’ views seriously while asking them to accept personal responsibility. The Bairnsdale post belongs to the practical teaching years behind that leadership. It gives East Gippsland a specific working connection with an educator who helped widen the expectations and opportunities available to young women.

🌾 Bruce Davidson

Bruce Davidson’s family were pioneers of the Tambo Crossing area, and he attended the local primary school before Bruthen and later schooling in Melbourne. In 1984 he published The School in the Valley, a history of Tambo Crossing Primary School. His better-known professional writing examined the economic limits of farming and irrigation, often challenging optimistic development proposals. He taught agricultural economics at the University of Sydney and remained an outspoken contributor to public debate. The school history shows another side of his interests, returning from large national arguments to the place where his own education began.
